Abstract

The objective of this project is to assess the importance of various determinants of health care demand. The initial phase of the project is to review the potential of a variety of approaches to this problem. These include econometrics, game theory, microsimulation, dynamical systems, and operations research.Through a better understanding of health care demand, improved management of care delivery and allocation of resources is possible. Examples of the potential application of a model for health care demand include: improving access to timely and appropriate care; development of investment strategies which will enhance the ability of patients to self-manage their care through healthy life-style choices; and engage both health providers and patients in a collaborative approach to care management. This project is part of a wider program on applications of mathematical modelling to the health care system.
